The number of Malaysian tourists visiting Japan soared by 21.9% year-on-year (YoY), reaching 506,800 in 2024, compared to 415,712 in 2023, according to the Japan National Tourism Organisation Kuala Lumpur Office (JNTO KL).
In December 2024 alone, the number of Malaysian visitors rose 17.8%, with 71,600 arrivals compared to 60,806 in December 2023.
This surge is driven by the strengthening of the Ringgit against the Japanese Yen, making travel more affordable for Malaysians. Additionally, Japan’s unique attractions and the introduction of chartered flights from Malaysia to the Tohoku region since 2022 have further fuelled tourism growth.

Easier Access to Halal Food in Japan
For Muslim travellers, finding Halal food in Japan is now easier than ever, thanks to the increasing number of Halal-certified restaurants, prayer-friendly facilities, and Muslim-friendly menu options across major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
According to Japan Halal Foundation, the number of Halal-certified restaurants in Japan has grown significantly, with Kyoto alone seeing a rise in dedicated Halal eateries. Popular tourist hubs now offer Halal ramen, wagyu beef dishes, and even traditional kaiseki meals tailored for Muslim visitors.
Additionally, major convenience store chains and airports now stock Halal-certified snacks and ready-to-eat meals, making travel more convenient for Malaysian tourists. Digital platforms like Halal Navi and Muslim Pro also help travellers locate nearby Halal food spots with ease.
With a favourable exchange rate, more flight options, and improved Halal dining accessibility, Japan remains a top travel destination for Malaysian tourists in 2025.
