Seoul, March 7 – The Seoul Metropolitan Government is ramping up efforts to make the city more Muslim-friendly by introducing Halal certification for restaurants and expanding cultural festivals. This initiative aims to attract more tourists from Africa and the Middle East.

In an official announcement on Thursday, authorities revealed that they are currently identifying Salam Seoul restaurants—Halal-certified establishments that strictly adhere to Islamic dietary laws, including the prohibition of pork and non-Halal ingredients.

To ensure credibility and compliance, previously recognized Halal-certified restaurants will undergo a reassessment. Government officials will conduct inspections to verify their adherence to Halal standards and confirm that they are still operating under the correct business category.

As part of this initiative, the city government will publish a comprehensive guidebook listing verified Halal restaurants, making it easier for Muslim tourists to find reliable dining options.

Salam Seoul Festival Returns This September!

The popular Salam Seoul Festival, which received an overwhelming response last year, is set to return on September 8 and 9 at Gwanghwamun Square in Jongno. This year, the event will be expanded into a two-day celebration featuring a fashion show and live performances showcasing the music and cultures of African and Middle Eastern countries.

Additionally, the Seoul government will once again recruit Salam Seoul Ambassadors—local and foreign individuals with extensive knowledge of Islamic culture—to help promote the initiative.

Over the past year, Seoul has hosted various Islamic cultural events, including the Salam Seoul Fam Tour in November and Taste of Salam Seoul in 2023, reinforcing its commitment to making the city more inclusive for Muslim visitors.
