The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has addressed recent concerns regarding zakat fund management and Halal certification integrity. Director-General Datuk Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee urged the public to maintain confidence in official religious institutions while investigations into viral allegations continue.

Protecting the Integrity of Zakat Institutions

Recently, allegations of zakat fund misappropriation have circulated online, causing public concern. However, Dr. Sirajuddin clarified that State Islamic Religious Councils are not involved in these issues. Instead, evidence suggests that third parties may have misused the funds.

Furthermore, JAKIM emphasised that all state religious agencies strictly follow established procedures and guidelines. Consequently, the public should wait for official investigation results before drawing conclusions. Regarding cross-state zakat payments, the Conference of Rulers has given royal assent that unauthorised collection is an offense. Only amils appointed by a specific state are authorised to collect zakat within that jurisdiction.

Strict Enforcement of Halal Standards

In addition to financial matters, JAKIM remains vigilant in upholding Halal standards across the country. Dr. Sirajuddin highlighted a recent case in Melaka where a coffee and biscuit manufacturer had its Halal certificate revoked.

JAKIM worked closely with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to act against the company. Once a certificate is revoked, the product can no longer be marketed as Halal and must be removed from the market immediately. This strict enforcement ensures that the “Halal Malaysia” logo remains a trusted symbol of quality and religious compliance.

Global Verification via the Verify Halal App

To protect themselves from unverified products, JAKIM encourages both traders and consumers to utilise the Verify Halal™ app. While the department maintains its official portal, this mobile application has become a global powerhouse for the Muslim community.

Currently, the Verify Halal™ app is actively used in 208 countries, making it a truly international companion for Halal-conscious consumers. With more than 600,000 downloads globally, the platform serves as a vital bridge between international Halal certification bodies and the end-user.

By using the app, you can:

  • Instant Check: Scan or search for brands to verify their Halal status in seconds.
  • Global Connectivity: Access data from various international Halal bodies recognised by JAKIM.
  • Safe Consumption: Ensure that the products you buy – whether at home or traveling abroad – meet authentic religious standards.

Traders are also urged to use the app to check their inventory. This prevents the accidental sale of products with revoked or expired certifications, protecting the business’s reputation and the consumer’s trust.

Community Development Through MADANI Initiatives

Beyond regulatory duties, JAKIM is actively involved in community development through the MADANI government goals. The department recently launched the 2026 MADANI adopted village and school programs in Padang Rengas.

These initiatives aim to boost physical, spiritual, and social development within local communities. With significant financial allocations and food basket contributions, JAKIM continues to support the welfare of the people while safeguarding Islamic values in Malaysia.
